4 doll-making craft workshops exploring othered identities

The Other Checkbox is a community arts project that explores otherness, feeling of belonging and representation of the different ethnic groups found in London, especially within the equality and diversity monitoring forms and the national statistics. Led by Sandy Abdelrahman and JC Candanedo , the idea of the project was born from their lived experience as immigrants and not feeling represented or belonging.

As part of the project, I’ve been invited to lead 4 creative workshops, where through working with different mediums of fabric, paper mâché, clay and paint the participants got to explore their ethnic and cultural identities.

The resulting sculptures and dolls, along with other various collective art-making activities outcomes were exhibited as part of “We Belong” exhibition, at Bermonsey Project Space, 31 January – 4 February 2023
